THE LOCAL ELITES OF THE ECUADORIAN COAST IN THE PROCESSES OF STATE CAPTURE

Abstract

Objective: The article analyzes the relationship between businessmen, political elites and the State between 2002 and 2020, considering the capture processes at local levels in order to benefit capital that took place throughout the period and how political-economic dynamics conditioned state building type to serve particular interests. Methodology: The empirical work was carried out with a qualitative methodology based on grounded theory and a process of triangulation of sources and information, which made it possible to demonstrate a State capture process. Conclusions: The political chieftains have constituted themselves as an emerging business elite that has captured the State for an extended period of time, possessing patronage networks that support national politicians while benefiting at local levels.
