Funding regulation of higher education implemented in Chile in 1980s can be defined as a self-financing regime. This system fits in constitutional categories such as the principle of subsidiarity, intermediate groups autonomy, the right to education and educational freedom. In turn, the underlying principles of this funding regulation are fully coherent with its foundations, provided by the dictatorship: depoliticization of universities, and subjecting higher education services to market mechanisms.
