Abstract

This work focuses on the text “El Quijote desde el punto de vista sociológico” (1916) by the Paraguayan writer and sociologist Ignacio A. Pane on the character by Miguel de Cervantes. The objectives are to analyse the ideas Pane had regarding the psychology and sociology of Don Quixote; explore the interpretation of the peculiar psychology that defined the character and the notions regarding his personality; and estimate the relevance of this writing by Pane in relation to Paraguayan psychology. It is concluded that Pane placed the discussion on the singularity of Don Quixote on a plane where sociological approaches coincide with psychological and literary ones, in addition to showing that in the first decades of the 20th century, the conceptual activity that had psychology as its epicentre was the product of the labour of relatively isolated individuals.
